About This Statistic
The Women, Business and the Law (WBL) index is a World Bank dataset that scores countries from 0 to 100 based on whether their laws provide equal economic rights and opportunities for women and men. The score aggregates eight legal domains—Mobility, Workplace, Pay, Marriage, Parenthood, Entrepreneurship, Assets, and Pension—capturing concrete, codified legal provisions rather than outcomes.
A score of 100 indicates legal parity across the measured areas, while lower scores point to specific legal restrictions that can limit women’s participation in the economy (for example, constraints related to employment, property, or parenthood protections). Because it is law-based, the WBL score is especially useful for comparing legal frameworks across countries and tracking reform progress over time.
