Key Findings
  • Highest values tend to occur in dense, highly mapped countries with extensive pedestrian networks (e.g., Japan, Singapore, Republic of Korea).
  • Large, low-density or under-mapped countries often show lower shares even when pedestrian areas exist, reflecting mapping gaps.
  • The indicator highlights differences in everyday proximity to pedestrian-only space, complementing traditional transport metrics focused on roads and vehicles.

About This Statistic

This indicator estimates how many people live close to streets that are mapped as car-free (for example, pedestrian-only ways and paths tagged in OpenStreetMap). It is a proxy for everyday access to car-free public space and potentially safer, quieter, and more walkable environments.

Values are computed by overlaying (1) a global gridded population surface and (2) OpenStreetMap street geometries filtered to “car-free” tags (e.g., highway=pedestrian/footway/path and related access restrictions), then calculating the share of residents whose grid cell centroid falls within 1 km of any qualifying segment. Because OpenStreetMap completeness and tagging practices vary by country, this measure is best interpreted as a comparable, OSM-derived walkability proxy rather than an official transport statistic.
