Key Insights
- •A small number of exporters account for the majority of major conventional weapons transferred globally in most years.
- •TIV enables comparison across exporters even when price data is unavailable or non-comparable.
- •Year-to-year exporter totals can swing due to the timing of deliveries of high-value platforms (e.g., combat aircraft, air-defense systems).

About This Statistic
This statistic reports the estimated value of each country’s exports of major conventional weapons in 2022 using SIPRI’s Trend Indicator Value (TIV) methodology. TIV is not a monetary value; it is a standardized measure designed to compare the volume/“military resource” of international transfers of major weapon systems (e.g., aircraft, missiles, ships, armored vehicles, air-defense systems) across countries and over time.
SIPRI derives TIVs from the known unit production costs of a core set of weapons and applies them to recorded transfers. Because prices, offsets, services, and contract terms vary widely—and are often confidential—TIV is best interpreted as a comparable indicator of the scale of transfers rather than actual revenue. Values below reflect 2022 exports only (not stocks, deliveries in other years, or small arms/light weapons).
