Share of women who reported feeling safe walking alone at night

This statistic measures the share of women (typically ages 15+) who answered “Yes” to a standard Gallup World Poll question asking whether they feel safe walking alone at night in the city or area where they live. It provides a people-centered view of personal security that complements crime-recording data, and it often reveals large gaps between countries (and between women and men) that can be linked to factors such as public lighting, transport access, policing, harassment prevalence, and broader social norms.

Because it is survey-based, the measure captures perceived safety rather than objectively recorded crime. That perception is still highly consequential: it shapes women’s mobility, labor-force participation, education choices, and use of public space—especially after dark. Values shown here are the latest available observation per country in the 2019–2023 window from Gallup World Poll as compiled in the UNDP Human Development Reports (Gender Social Norms Index / related safety indicators).
