Key Insights
- •In most countries, women perform a large majority of total unpaid household and care work (often 70–90%).
- •Several South Asian and Middle Eastern countries show especially high female shares (commonly above ~80%).
- •Nordic and some Western European countries tend to have the lowest female shares (closer to ~55–62%), reflecting more equal division—though not full parity.
- •Because it is a share, policy changes that increase men’s unpaid work (e.g., parental leave uptake) can reduce the imbalance even if women’s minutes change slowly.

About This Statistic
This statistic shows the share of total unpaid household and care work performed by women (ages 15+), based on nationally representative time-use surveys compiled by the International Labour Organization (ILO). Unpaid work includes routine housework (e.g., cooking, cleaning) and unpaid care for household members (e.g., childcare, eldercare), measured as average minutes per day.
Because time-use surveys are not run every year in every country, the “year” varies by country; the ILO publishes the latest available figure for each country and harmonizes activities to improve cross-country comparability. The indicator is powerful because it quantifies an often-invisible part of the economy and helps explain gender gaps in paid employment, income, and time poverty.
