Key Insights
- •Legal protection varies widely: many countries prohibit corporal punishment in schools but not in the home.
- •Because several highly populous countries have not fully prohibited corporal punishment in all settings, the population share covered by full bans is substantially lower than the share of countries with bans.
- •Tracking this indicator over time provides a clear view of child-rights legal reform momentum globally.

About This Statistic
This statistic estimates how much of the world’s population lives under national laws that fully prohibit corporal punishment of children across key settings (including the home, schools, and alternative care). It is a useful lens on child-rights protections because legal bans are strongly associated with lower social acceptance and use of physical punishment over time.
The underlying country-level data come from the Global Initiative to End All Corporal Punishment of Children (which tracks legal status by country and territory). To create a population-weighted global picture, each country is coded as 1 if it has a full prohibition in all settings and 0 otherwise, then weighted by total population using the UN World Population Prospects population estimates for the year.
