Key Findings
  • Financial resilience varies dramatically across countries, from single-digit shares in the most fragile contexts to near-universal access in high-income economies.
  • High account ownership does not always imply high emergency-funds access; credit availability and social networks also matter.
  • This metric is a practical proxy for how well households can withstand sudden expenses without long-term hardship.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures financial resilience: the share of adults (age 15+) who report that they could come up with emergency funds within 30 days if they had an unexpected need. It captures households’ perceived ability to cope with shocks (job loss, medical bills, urgent repairs) using savings, borrowing, help from family/friends, or other sources.

The indicator comes from the World Bank’s Global Findex Database (survey-based, nationally representative). It is especially useful because it complements “account ownership” by focusing on whether people believe they can mobilize money quickly—an ability that varies widely with income levels, access to credit, social networks, and safety nets.
