Key Findings
  • Norway leads globally with BEVs comprising the vast majority of new passenger car registrations in 2023.
  • Several European countries (e.g., Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Finland) show very high BEV shares, reflecting strong incentives and charging buildout.
  • China’s large market translates into substantial BEV share and scale, influencing global supply chains.
  • Many low- and middle-income countries remain near-zero BEV share, indicating barriers in affordability, charging access, and used-vehicle market dynamics.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures how quickly countries are shifting to fully battery-electric passenger cars by looking at the share of BEVs in new car registrations (sales) in a given year. It captures real consumer and fleet adoption, and it is highly sensitive to policy (incentives, taxes), charging availability, and vehicle prices.

A high BEV share does not necessarily mean a country has the most EVs on the road overall, because it depends on the existing vehicle stock and annual turnover. Still, it is one of the clearest, most comparable signals of the direction of travel in road transport electrification and is published consistently across many countries in the IEA’s Global EV Data Explorer.
