Share of nationally designated Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) covered by protected areas (%)
Percent of each country’s Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) that are covered by protected areas—an indicator of how well critical habitats are formally safeguarded.

Key Insights
- •The indicator highlights gaps between biodiversity importance (KBAs) and formal protected-area designation.
- •Many countries show low KBA coverage, suggesting key habitats may remain outside protected areas.
- •Several countries reach 100% in the SDG series, indicating all mapped national KBAs fall within protected areas—though this does not guarantee effective management.

About This Statistic
Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are sites that contribute significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity (for example, important habitats for threatened or geographically restricted species). This statistic measures the share of a country’s nationally designated KBAs that fall within protected areas, expressed as a percentage.
Higher values generally indicate that more of a country’s most important biodiversity sites have formal protection status (national parks, reserves, etc.). However, coverage does not necessarily guarantee effective management or enforcement, and the indicator may change as KBA boundaries are updated, protected areas expand/contract, or spatial datasets improve.
