Key Findings
  • Hydropower remains dominant in a handful of countries — a small group produce the majority (often >80%) of their electricity from hydropower (e.g., Paraguay, Tajikistan, and some Andean/Amazonian and Himalayan economies).
  • Many high-income European and North American countries have significant hydropower shares (Norway, Canada) but most advanced economies have diversified mixes; several oil/gas-rich countries have effectively 0% hydropower.
  • Globally, hydropower provides a large share of renewable electricity but is unevenly distributed; infrastructure vulnerability to droughts and climate change is a growing risk for countries heavily reliant on hydropower.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the proportion of a country's total electricity generation that was produced by hydropower (run‑of‑river and reservoir dams) in 2023. Hydropower is the largest single source of renewable electricity globally and is highly geographically concentrated; some countries generate almost all their electricity from hydropower, while others have effectively none. The metric is useful for understanding vulnerability to hydrological variability, the role of renewables in national power systems, and where seasonal water resources drive electricity supply.

Primary source compilations for this indicator are available from IEA, BP Statistical Review / BP Statistical Review country datasets, and Our World in Data (which aggregates official national energy balances). Values here use the most recent country-level electricity-by-source compilations for 2023 where available (or latest year reported close to 2023). Countries with very small hydropower contributions will show values near zero; countries with large river systems or major reservoirs often exceed 50–90%.
