Key Findings
  • Large gaps persist: in several countries, fewer than 1 in 3 married/in-union women with family-planning need are using modern methods.
  • Many high-income countries cluster in the 80%+ range, reflecting broad access to modern contraception.
  • Several low-income and conflict-affected countries remain below 25%, indicating major access and service-delivery constraints.
  • The indicator highlights actionable health-system differences (availability, affordability, and outreach) rather than only demographic outcomes like fertility rates.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the share of women ages 15–49 who are married or in a union and who want to avoid pregnancy (i.e., have a “need for family planning”) and whose need is met by modern contraceptive methods. It is a widely used indicator of access to and effective use of reproductive health services.

Higher values generally indicate better access to modern contraception and stronger reproductive health systems, though interpretation can vary by country context (fertility preferences, service quality, rights-based access, and data source differences). The indicator is compiled by the UN and partners from household surveys and modelled estimates to improve comparability over time and across countries.
