Key Insights
- •TV ownership is near-universal (≈99% of households) across much of Europe, North America, and high-income Asia-Pacific.
- •Large gaps persist in several low-income countries, where fewer than 20% of households report owning a TV set.
- •The indicator often rises quickly alongside electrification and urbanization, making it a useful ‘everyday technology’ proxy for development.

About This Statistic
This statistic measures the percentage of households that report owning at least one television set. It’s a simple but revealing indicator of household asset ownership and access to broadcast (and increasingly connected) media—often tracking electrification, disposable income, and urbanization.
The UN Statistics Division (UNSD) compiles this indicator from national population and housing censuses and household surveys and disseminates it through UNData. While many high-income countries are near saturation, variation remains substantial in parts of Sub‑Saharan Africa and some low‑income or conflict‑affected settings, making it a surprisingly informative “everyday technology” metric.
