Key Findings
  • Women’s share of agricultural production value varies widely across countries, reflecting differences in farm structure and access to resources.
  • Many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South Asia show comparatively high estimated women’s contributions.
  • In higher-income and more commercialized farming systems, women’s attributed share is often lower, despite significant participation in specific subsectors.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the share of a country’s domestic agricultural production value that is produced by women, expressed as a percentage. It is a model-based estimate that combines information on who manages farms and who contributes labor (from agricultural censuses and household surveys) with production/value data, to attribute a portion of national agricultural output to women.

It’s a useful lens on food systems and gender equality because it links women’s roles in agriculture to economic value—not only participation. Differences across countries can reflect farm structure (smallholder vs. commercial), women’s access to land and inputs, and sector composition (e.g., livestock vs. crops).
