Key Findings
  • Digital transaction behavior varies enormously, from low single digits in some low-income countries to above 90% in several high-income economies.
  • Nordic and Western European countries are among the highest adopters, reflecting high trust, broadband access, and ubiquitous digital payment rails.
  • Large middle-income countries show wide dispersion (e.g., higher in China than in India), highlighting differences in platform ecosystems and payment infrastructure.
  • Even where internet access is growing, online payment behavior can lag due to affordability, merchant acceptance, and consumer trust constraints.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the share of adults (ages 15+) who report using the internet to pay bills or to buy something online during the past 12 months. It captures a practical, behavior-based dimension of digitalization—how often people actually complete online transactions, not just whether they have internet access.

The measure comes from the World Bank’s Global Findex Database (2021 edition), a large, nationally representative survey. It is useful for comparing digital commerce adoption across countries and highlighting gaps driven by infrastructure, affordability, trust, payment systems, and regulation.
