Key Insights
- •Obesity prevalence varies widely across countries, from low single digits in some Asian countries to very high levels in parts of Oceania and the Gulf.
- •High-income countries are not the only ones affected; many middle-income countries show rapidly rising obesity burdens.
- •Age-standardization improves comparability but does not remove differences in data quality and survey recency across countries.
- •Countries with the highest obesity prevalence often face a dual burden of diet-related disease alongside other health system pressures.

About This Statistic
This statistic measures the estimated share of adults (ages 18+) living with obesity, defined as body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m². The World Health Organization (WHO) publishes comparable country estimates by modelling survey and measured-height/weight data to fill gaps where recent national data are missing.
Adult obesity is a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases (including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease) and is shaped by diet, physical activity environments, income, urbanization, and food systems. Cross-country comparisons are useful for policy benchmarking, but results should be interpreted alongside data quality, survey methods, and population structure.
