Key Findings
  • Many countries recorded hundreds of days of full school closures, indicating prolonged disruptions beyond short emergency lockdowns.
  • Closure duration varied widely across countries, reflecting different public-health strategies, reopening capacity, and policy choices.
  • Small-island and high-capacity systems often show fewer full-closure days, while several South Asian and Latin American countries show among the longest durations.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the total number of days that schools were fully closed at the national level during the COVID-19 pandemic, covering pre-primary through upper secondary education. It captures the cumulative duration of complete in-person shutdowns and is a direct proxy for the scale of disruption to learning and daily life experienced by students and families.

UNESCO tracks country policies on school closures and reports them as “days of full closure” (as well as partial closures). While it does not capture within-country variation or the quality of remote learning, it provides a comparable, policy-based view of how long education systems were entirely closed in each country during the pandemic period.
