Key Findings
  • Road traffic mortality varies widely across countries, indicating major differences in road safety systems and enforcement.
  • Many high-income countries cluster at very low rates (often under 5 per 100,000), while several low- and middle-income countries exceed 20 per 100,000.
  • High rates often coincide with rapid motorization, limited enforcement of speed/helmet/seatbelt laws, and weaker trauma care systems.
  • The indicator aligns with SDG target 3.6 on reducing road traffic deaths and injuries.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the rate of deaths caused by road traffic injuries per 100,000 people in each country. It is one of the clearest, most comparable indicators of road safety outcomes because it reflects the combined effects of infrastructure quality, vehicle safety, enforcement (speeding, seatbelts, helmets, drunk driving), post-crash care, and exposure to risk.

The World Health Organization publishes country-level modeled estimates of road traffic mortality in its Global Health Estimates (GHE), harmonizing multiple sources (civil registration, police records, surveys, and studies) to improve comparability—especially where death registration systems are incomplete. Lower rates generally indicate safer road systems, though exposure (e.g., travel volumes and modal mix) also matters.
