Key Findings
  • PPP-adjusted household electricity prices still vary widely, indicating substantial differences in policy (taxes/subsidies), grid costs, and generation mix.
  • Several high-income countries with strong carbon pricing and grid levies show higher household prices even after PPP adjustment.
  • Resource-rich producers with regulated tariffs and subsidies often show very low PPP-adjusted household electricity prices.
  • PPP adjustment can change the ranking versus market-exchange-rate comparisons, especially for lower-income economies.

About This Statistic

This statistic shows the price households pay for electricity, expressed as PPP-adjusted US$ per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Using PPP (purchasing power parity) helps make prices more comparable across countries by accounting for differences in local price levels, not just market exchange rates.

Household electricity prices reflect a country’s generation mix, fuel costs, grid and distribution expenses, taxes/levies, and subsidy policies. They also capture how energy shocks and regulation translate into what people actually pay on their bills. Because tariff structures vary (tiered pricing, time-of-use rates, fixed charges), these values should be treated as comparable “average price levels” rather than a single universal tariff.
