About This Statistic
This statistic measures how much *new* renewable electricity-generating capacity each country added in a single year, divided by its population—expressed in watts per person. It highlights where the fastest year-over-year buildout is happening relative to country size, revealing leaders that may be overlooked in total (absolute) gigawatts.
Values are calculated from IRENA’s country renewable capacity time series as the year-on-year change in total renewable installed capacity (MW) from 2022 to 2023, converted to watts and divided by 2023 population (World Bank). This captures new build (net of retirements) across renewables (solar, wind, hydro, bioenergy, geothermal, marine) and is comparable across countries.
