Key Findings
  • Remittance fees remain far above the SDG target of 3% in many low-income and fragile states.
  • Countries with stronger digital payment ecosystems and greater provider competition tend to have lower costs.
  • High costs are often concentrated in corridors with low transaction volumes or limited financial-sector competition.
  • Even a 2–3 percentage-point reduction can materially increase household income in remittance-dependent economies.

About This Statistic

This statistic tracks the average cost of sending US$200 in international remittances, expressed as a percentage of the amount sent (SDG indicator 10.c.1). It captures total costs paid by the sender (fees plus the exchange-rate margin where measured), averaged across major remittance corridors and providers in each receiving country.

It matters because remittances are a major income source for many households; even a few percentage points in fees can translate into substantial losses for families. Countries with limited competition among money transfer operators, weak digital payment rails, capital controls, or low transaction volumes often face higher costs.
