Key Findings
  • Per-capita refugee hosting varies by orders of magnitude across countries—much more than absolute host counts suggest.
  • Several middle-income and smaller countries can rank highest per capita because large refugee inflows are substantial relative to their population.
  • Neighbouring countries to major conflicts often show the highest rates, reflecting geographic proximity and cross-border displacement patterns.
  • Per-capita indicators help discuss responsibility-sharing beyond total numbers.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the number of refugees hosted in a country per 1,000 inhabitants. It highlights hosting responsibility in a way that absolute refugee counts can’t: smaller countries can host very large refugee populations relative to their size, while larger countries may host more refugees in total but fewer per person.

Values come from UNHCR’s official refugee stock by host country (end-year) combined with total population to express a comparable per-capita hosting rate. The result is a clear, intuitive indicator of humanitarian load-sharing and the demographic scale of refugee hosting across the world.
