About This Statistic
The Red List Index (RLI) summarizes overall extinction risk across major taxonomic groups assessed by the IUCN Red List. It ranges from 1 (all species are Least Concern) to 0 (all species are Extinct). Country values reflect the aggregate extinction risk for species occurring within each country (a biodiversity “health” proxy rather than a count of threatened species).
This is a compelling, underused biodiversity metric because it captures whether a country’s wildlife is moving toward higher risk categories over time. It is published internationally as SDG indicator 15.5.1 and is derived directly from IUCN Red List category changes (genuine status changes, excluding reassessments due only to improved knowledge).
