About This Statistic

The national price level (often called the Price Level Ratio, PLR) compares a country’s overall price level to the United States (US=100). It is computed as the ratio of the PPP conversion factor (local currency per international dollar) to the market exchange rate (local currency per US dollar), multiplied by 100. Values above 100 indicate a country is more expensive than the US on average; values below 100 indicate it is cheaper.

This metric is useful because it provides a single, comparable indicator of relative costliness across economies, drawing on the International Comparison Program (ICP) price surveys and national accounts. It’s widely used to contextualize wages, living costs, and cross-country comparisons of real purchasing power beyond nominal exchange-rate conversions.
