About This Statistic
This statistic measures the percentage of a country’s population experiencing moderate or severe food insecurity, based on the FAO’s Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES). “Moderate or severe” reflects constrained access to adequate food—ranging from reduced quality/quantity to going without food.
It is a useful, comparable indicator across countries because it is derived from a standardized survey module and scaled using FAO’s methodology. It captures lived experience rather than only food supply, making it a compelling lens on affordability shocks, conflict, and climate stress.
