Key Findings
  • Many high-income and small-island countries are near universal (≈100%) by this distance metric.
  • Large gaps persist in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and conflict-affected countries, where major shares of the population live farther than 5 km from facilities.
  • Middle-income countries often show high national coverage yet can still have significant rural pockets of low access not visible in a single national percentage.
  • Because it’s distance-based (not travel-time), results can differ from access indicators derived from road networks and terrain.

About This Statistic

This statistic estimates what share of a country’s population lives within 5 kilometers of a health facility (such as a clinic, health center, or hospital), using geospatial facility location datasets overlaid with gridded population maps. It’s a practical, everyday measure of physical access to care—especially important in rural areas where distance and travel time can be a major barrier.

The indicator is typically produced by combining national or global facility registries (geocoded points) with high-resolution population surfaces (e.g., WorldPop) and then calculating the population contained inside a 5 km buffer around facilities. While it does not measure quality of care, staffing, or whether facilities are functional, it provides a comparable, map-based proxy for basic geographic accessibility that can reveal large within-country and cross-country gaps.
