Key Findings
  • High-income countries are near-universal (often ~99–100%) for safely managed drinking water, while several low-income and conflict-affected countries remain far below 50%.
  • Large middle-income countries show substantial variation, indicating that infrastructure and water-quality governance—not just income—drive outcomes.
  • Some countries with high ‘improved source’ coverage still have lower ‘safely managed’ coverage due to contamination or intermittent supply.
  • The indicator highlights the gap between access to an improved source and truly safe, reliable drinking water.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the percentage of a country’s population using “safely managed” drinking water services, the highest service level under SDG 6.1. It requires an improved water source that is located on premises, available when needed, and free from contamination (at minimum, fecal and priority chemical contamination where data exist).

The WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) produces these estimates by compiling nationally representative household surveys, censuses, and administrative data, then applying standardized methods to ensure comparability across countries and over time. Values are modelled where direct measurements are incomplete, which improves coverage but can introduce uncertainty—especially where water-quality testing data are sparse.
