Key Findings
  • This indicator often reveals substantial gaps hidden by ‘improved water source’ coverage, especially where water quality testing or reliability is limited.
  • Many high-income countries are near 100%, but some middle-income countries show large shortfalls due to availability/quality constraints.
  • The lowest values are concentrated in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting combined infrastructure, reliability, and water quality challenges.
  • Because the measure requires ‘available when needed,’ droughts and supply interruptions can meaningfully affect safely managed coverage even where infrastructure exists.

About This Statistic

This statistic shows the percentage of a country’s population using **safely managed drinking-water services**, as defined by the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP). “Safely managed” means drinking water from an improved source that is located on premises, available when needed, and free from fecal and priority chemical contamination.

It is a higher standard than “basic” or “improved” water access and reveals gaps that can be hidden by broader coverage measures. The indicator is used for SDG monitoring (SDG 6.1.1) and is available for a large number of countries, enabling global comparison and mapping.
