Key Findings
  • New conflict-related displacement is highly concentrated in a small number of countries experiencing major wars or escalations.
  • Annual ‘new displacements’ can surge rapidly with changes in front lines, urban offensives, or large-scale insecurity.
  • Event-based displacement data complements (but is not interchangeable with) end-of-year IDP stock figures.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the number of **new internal displacements** triggered by **conflict and violence** in a given year—people who were forced to flee their homes but remained within their country’s borders. Unlike refugee counts (cross-border), internal displacement captures rapid, often repeated movements inside a country and is highly sensitive to spikes in violence, insecurity, and front-line shifts.

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) compiles these figures from a structured review of multiple sources (e.g., UN agencies, NGOs, government reporting, media and situational updates), applying quality checks and, where needed, estimation methods to avoid double-counting and to reconcile overlapping reports. The result is one of the most widely used global datasets for tracking internal displacement dynamics annually.
