Key Findings
  • Highest-index destination countries cluster in major multi-year war theaters (e.g., Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Ukraine).
  • Several regions show persistent foreign involvement over the decade: parts of the Sahel, Horn of Africa, and Middle East.
  • Some countries appear as mid-level destinations due to episodic cross-border operations or short multi-year interventions.
  • The measure is best used to visualize patterns of destination exposure rather than to rank precise levels of foreign combat involvement.

About This Statistic

This statistic maps where states have conducted war abroad by destination country, expressed as an index representing the share of years in the last decade (2015–2024) during which there was active combat involving foreign state forces on the territory of each destination country.

Because there is no single universal dataset literally titled “war abroad by destination country,” this uses a defensible proxy built from widely used conflict datasets that record active armed conflict and external/foreign participation. The index is designed for map visualization and cross-country comparability: higher values indicate a destination country more frequently experiencing overseas/foreign state war involvement in the period.

Methodology

Proxy construction (destination-country index): For each destination country, estimate the number of years (2015–2024) in which armed conflict on that territory plausibly involved foreign state military forces (direct intervention, coalition operations, cross-border operations, or internationally supported combat). Convert to a percentage by (years with foreign war involvement / 10) * 100. This is a harmonized, map-friendly measure; it is not a direct count of interventions nor a legal classification (war vs. operation). Values below should be treated as estimated and indicative rather than definitive.
