Nitrogen fertilizer use intensity — kilograms of nitrogen per hectare of arable land

This statistic measures how intensively countries use nitrogen fertilizers in crop production, expressed as kilograms of nitrogen nutrient applied per hectare of arable land (kg N/ha). It is a useful lens on agricultural intensification and potential environmental pressure, because higher nitrogen application can raise yields but also increases risks of nitrate leaching, eutrophication, and nitrous oxide emissions if poorly managed.

The data come from FAOSTAT’s fertilizer nutrient use accounts, which harmonize national reporting and trade/production balances to estimate nutrient quantities applied to soils. Dividing national nitrogen nutrient use by arable land area provides a comparable “use intensity” metric across countries, though it does not capture within-country variation, timing, crop mix, or best-practice efficiency (e.g., precision application).
