Key Findings
  • Disaster-triggered displacement can reach millions in a single year in large, hazard-exposed countries.
  • Floods and storms tend to dominate annual displacement totals in many regions.
  • High-income countries can still record large displacement due to preventive evacuations during major events.
  • Because the metric counts displacement events, repeated evacuations can significantly raise totals.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the number of *new internal displacements* recorded during the year that were triggered by disasters such as storms, floods, wildfires, earthquakes and volcanic activity. A single person can be counted more than once if they are displaced multiple times in the year (for example, repeated evacuations during successive storms). The data are compiled by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) using event-based reporting and country-level sources.

Disaster displacement is a useful lens on climate and hazard impacts because it captures not just physical exposure, but also vulnerability, preparedness, housing quality and the ability to safely return. It often spikes in years with major storms and flooding, and it can be substantial even in high-income countries where preventive evacuations are common.
