About This Statistic

This statistic measures how much methane (CH₄) is emitted per unit of energy produced from oil and gas operations in each country, expressed as kilograms of methane per gigajoule (kg CH₄/GJ). It captures upstream and midstream methane performance (e.g., leaks, venting, flaring inefficiencies) relative to production volumes, making it a strong indicator of operational climate efficiency rather than sheer scale of production.

Because methane is a potent greenhouse gas, reducing methane intensity is one of the fastest near-term levers to slow warming. Countries with similar oil-and-gas output can have very different methane intensities due to infrastructure age, regulation, measurement practices, and the prevalence of venting/leaks versus captured gas. The data are modelled by the IEA using country- and basin-level activity data combined with emission factors and available measurement evidence; values should be treated as best estimates and are revised as new information becomes available.
