Key Findings
  • Upload speeds vary dramatically across countries, often more than download speeds, revealing a ‘creator/remote-work’ digital divide.
  • Fiber-heavy markets tend to lead on uploads; cable/DSL-heavy markets may show weaker upload performance even with decent downloads.
  • Small, high-income economies with dense fiber deployment commonly rank among the top upload performers.
  • Low upload capacity can be a hidden constraint on video calls, cloud use, and small business digitalization.

About This Statistic

Most “internet speed” headlines focus on download rates, but upload capacity increasingly determines real-world experience—cloud backups, video calls, remote work, and creators publishing content. This statistic uses Speedtest by Ookla’s country-level median fixed-broadband upload speed, measured from millions of user-initiated tests.

Because it reflects actual tests on real connections (not advertised plan speeds), it captures day-to-day performance and infrastructure quality. It also highlights a frequently overlooked digital divide: some countries may have reasonable downloads while still suffering from very weak upload speeds, which affects participation in the modern economy.
