International reserves (including gold) in months of imports

This statistic measures the adequacy of a country’s external liquidity by expressing official international reserves (including gold) as “months of imports.” A value of 6, for example, means reserves are roughly equal to six months of that country’s import bill. It’s a widely used indicator for external vulnerability, currency stability, and the ability to withstand trade shocks or sudden stops in capital flows.

The metric is especially interesting because it reveals very different policy choices and risk profiles: some economies maintain very high buffers (often commodity exporters, small island states, or countries with fixed/managed exchange rates), while others operate with leaner buffers due to deep financial markets, reserve-currency status, or constrained access to reserves. Comparisons should be made carefully because import volatility, data coverage, and special-purpose reserves can affect the ratio.
