About This Statistic
This statistic measures the estimated number of people living in each destination country who were born in Turkey, regardless of their current citizenship. It is a widely used, globally comparable proxy for "Turks abroad" because country of birth is more consistent across countries than citizenship (which changes with naturalization).
The underlying figures come from the UN DESA International Migrant Stock dataset (2020 round), which harmonizes census and administrative data reported by destination countries and applies demographic estimation methods to fill gaps. Values are best interpreted as stock counts (people) around the reference year, not annual migration flows.
Methodology
UN DESA compiles the International Migrant Stock primarily from destination-country population censuses and administrative registers, harmonizing definitions and applying estimation methods to produce comparable migrant-stock matrices by origin and destination. This indicator uses the origin country = Turkey and reports the estimated stock of Turkey-born residents in each destination country for the 2020 round.
