Key Findings
  • In many countries in the Americas, a very large majority of homicide victims are killed with firearms (often well above 60%).
  • Several East Asian and some Western European countries show very low firearm shares (often near 0–5%), reflecting different weapon availability and homicide modalities.
  • Firearm share can diverge sharply from the overall homicide rate—some countries have low homicide rates but still a high firearm proportion among the few cases that occur.

About This Statistic

This indicator measures how large a share of homicide victims in a country were killed with a firearm (handguns, rifles, shotguns, etc.). It highlights differences in weapon availability, criminal markets, policing, and conflict dynamics—even when overall homicide rates are similar.

Data come from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Global Study on Homicide / UNODC Data Portal, which compiles criminal justice and vital registration sources reported by national authorities. Values typically refer to the latest year available for each country (often 2019–2022), so cross-country comparisons should be interpreted as “latest observed” rather than a single synchronized year.
