Key Findings
  • Homicide rates vary widely across countries, from ~0.2 to >50 victims per 100,000.
  • Several countries in the Americas and parts of Africa show substantially higher national homicide rates than most of Europe and East Asia.
  • Many Western and Northern European countries cluster below ~1.5 per 100,000.
  • This proxy is useful for a global map of relative homicide burden, but it cannot attribute risk to train stations specifically.

About This Statistic

Internationally comparable, country-level statistics on homicides specifically occurring in train stations are generally not collected or published in a harmonized way across countries. Police-recorded crime data is often available only at national level, by broad location type, or for select cities—making cross-country map visualization impractical for the specific query.

As the closest robust proxy with broad global coverage, this dataset uses the intentional homicide rate (victims per 100,000 population). It captures overall lethal violence in a country and can be used as an indicator of underlying homicide risk environment, but it does not isolate railway or transit-station incidents.

Methodology

Values represent the intentional homicide rate: the number of victims of intentional homicide per 100,000 population. Intentional homicide is defined (UNODC) as unlawful death purposefully inflicted on a person by another person. Where the most recent year is unavailable for a country, the nearest available recent year is used (mixed-year approach) to maximize coverage for mapping.
