About This Statistic
This statistic measures how much solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity-generation capacity a country has installed relative to its population, expressed in watts per person. It’s a useful way to compare solar build‑out across countries of very different sizes: a small country with aggressive rooftop and utility-scale solar can rank far above a much larger country even if its total gigawatts are smaller.
Values are computed by taking each country’s cumulative installed solar PV capacity (end‑of‑year, MW) from IRENA’s renewable capacity database and dividing by the country’s mid‑year population (World Bank), then converting to watts per person (W/person). Higher values generally reflect supportive policy, strong solar resources, high electricity prices, and/or limited domestic fossil generation options.
