Key Insights
- •The 2022 HDI spans a wide range (about 0.394 to 0.967), reflecting large cross-country gaps in combined health, education, and living standards.
- •Nordic and Western European countries, along with Switzerland, Australia, and Singapore, sit near the top of the distribution.
- •Several countries remain below ~0.55, indicating persistent deficits across multiple human development dimensions rather than income alone.
- •Many upper-middle HDI countries cluster between ~0.70 and ~0.85, where incremental gains often depend on education quality and health outcomes as much as income growth.

About This Statistic
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a widely used composite indicator published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that summarizes a country’s average achievements in three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, access to knowledge, and a decent standard of living.
HDI is reported on a 0–1 scale (higher is better) and is calculated from (1) life expectancy at birth, (2) education (expected years of schooling and mean years of schooling), and (3) gross national income (GNI) per capita (PPP, log-transformed). It’s useful for comparing overall development outcomes beyond income alone, and it underpins UNDP’s classifications (Very High/High/Medium/Low human development).
