Key Insights
- •Homicide rates vary by more than two orders of magnitude globally, from near 0.2 to over 100 per 100,000.
- •The Americas include many of the highest national homicide rates, while several East Asian and Western European countries are among the lowest.
- •Small states can show high volatility year-to-year because a small change in counts can shift the rate noticeably.
- •High homicide rates often correlate with organized crime, firearms availability, and weak rule of law, but drivers differ by country.

About This Statistic
This statistic measures the rate of intentional homicides—unlawful deaths purposely inflicted on a person—per 100,000 population. It is a widely used indicator of public safety and violent crime, tracked globally under SDG indicator 16.1.1.
Cross-country comparability is strong but not perfect: counting rules and the timeliness of police and vital-registration systems differ. UNODC compiles and harmonizes national data (from criminal justice systems and/or public health statistics) and publishes country time series. Countries with weaker registration systems may have older or modelled values, so the “year” and data quality can vary by country.
