About This Statistic
This statistic measures the extent to which a country’s laws treat women and men equally across multiple areas of daily life and economic participation. It is reported as a score from 0 to 100, where 100 indicates legal equality on the indicators covered. It is designed to be comparable across countries and over time.
The score is built from legal indicators spanning domains such as mobility, workplace rights, pay, marriage, parenthood, entrepreneurship, assets, and pensions. It reflects the law on the books (de jure), not necessarily outcomes in practice (de facto). Many countries have improved scores in recent years through reforms—making the cross-country distribution a useful snapshot of where legal barriers remain most significant.
