Key Findings
  • Certification coverage is highly uneven globally, with much higher shares in some northern European countries and lower shares across many tropical and low-income countries.
  • A country can have very large forest area but a low certified share if certification uptake is limited.
  • The indicator is useful for sustainable-sourcing discussions, but it should be interpreted alongside forest governance, legality assurance, and deforestation trends.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the percentage of a country’s total forest area that is certified under one (or both) of the two major independent forest certification schemes: FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). Certification is widely used as a market signal that forests are managed according to environmental and social standards and that timber and paper can be sourced responsibly.

The indicator is compiled in the FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) from country-reported certified area and total forest area. Coverage varies by country because certification is voluntary, industry-driven, and often concentrated in commercial forests; some countries with large forest areas may have low certification shares despite substantial forest governance systems outside FSC/PEFC frameworks.
