Estimated share of people aged 70+ with access to community gardens (proxy: nearby public green/open space)
Modeled estimate of the share of people aged 70+ with access to community gardens, proxied using national urban green/open-space access indicators.

Key Insights
- •Higher-income, highly urbanized countries tend to have higher modeled access due to more prevalent public open space provision and connectivity.
- •Lower-income and conflict-affected settings show lower modeled access, reflecting limited public open space availability and weaker urban infrastructure.
- •The modeled 70+ rates are generally slightly lower than general-population access due to the effective-access adjustment for mobility constraints.
- •Regional clustering is strong: Northern/Western Europe and Oceania are highest; parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are lowest.

About This Statistic
No globally standardized, country-comparable indicator directly measures the “% of people aged 70+ who have access to community gardens.” Definitions of access (distance, membership, availability, eligibility, opening hours) and what qualifies as a community garden vary widely across countries.
To produce mappable country-level values, this statistic uses a proxy approach: it treats “access to community gardens” as correlated with “convenient access to public open/green space” (aligned with the intent of SDG 11.7.1) and then applies an age adjustment for older adults. The resulting values should be interpreted as an approximate indicator of the enabling environment for older adults to reach shared outdoor growing/green spaces, not a direct measurement of community-garden access.
Methodology
Because a direct global measure does not exist, values are modeled as a proxy for “community garden access.” Steps: (1) Use the closest cross-country concept: convenient access to public open space/green space (aligned with SDG 11.7.1 intent). Where SDG 11.7.1 ‘population access’ is missing or inconsistent, a harmonized estimate is imputed using typical regional access patterns and each country’s urbanization rate (World Bank SP.URB.TOTL.IN.ZS) to produce a map-ready percent. (2) Apply a simplified 70+ adjustment: older adults are assumed to have broadly similar geographic availability as the general population but slightly reduced effective access (mobility constraints), implemented as a small downward adjustment (larger in lower-access contexts). (3) Cap outputs to [5, 95] to avoid implausible extremes given the proxy nature. This produces a consistent country:value series suitable for visualization, but it is not a direct survey of community-garden availability nor an observed 70+ access rate.
