Key Findings
  • Rates vary widely across countries in 2019, from near 0 in some microstates to above 30 deaths per 100,000 in several countries.
  • Some of the highest listed rates include Libya (36.5), Dominican Republic (34.6), and United Republic of Tanzania (32.9).
  • Many high-income countries cluster at low single-digit rates (e.g., Sweden 2.1, Norway 2.5, Switzerland 2.6).
  • A large number of countries fall in the mid-to-high teens and 20s, indicating a substantial global road-injury burden.

About This Statistic

The estimated road traffic death rate measures how many people die from road traffic crashes per 100,000 population in a given year. Unlike raw police-reported counts, the World Health Organization (WHO) provides standardized estimates that may adjust for under-reporting and differences in national reporting systems, improving cross-country comparability.

This indicator is widely used to assess the overall burden of road traffic injuries and to monitor road safety progress across countries. Higher values generally reflect greater crash risk and/or weaker road safety systems (infrastructure, enforcement, vehicle standards, emergency response), though interpretation can also be influenced by exposure (e.g., travel volume) and data quality.

Methodology

WHO produces modeled/estimated road traffic death rates to improve international comparability. Estimates may adjust national reported road traffic deaths for under-reporting and harmonize definitions/coverage using a standardized approach, then express results as deaths per 100,000 population for the given year.
