About This Statistic
A globally standardized, official country-by-country statistic for total “tennis matches played” is not published by major statistical agencies because matches are recorded by federations/leagues/tours rather than national statistical systems. To still support map visualization, this dataset provides a modeled estimate of annual tennis matches played at the country level.
Method: we use a participation-based proxy approach aligned with the ITF’s global participation reporting concept: total matches are estimated from the number of tennis participants multiplied by an assumed average number of matches played per participant per year, then adjusted for the fact that each match involves two players (so participant-match appearances are divided by 2 to produce match counts). Values below are therefore estimates intended for visualization and cross-country comparison, not official audited totals.
Methodology
Modeled estimate using a participation proxy: EstimatedMatches = (EstimatedTennisPlayers × AssumedMatchesPerPlayerPerYear) ÷ 2. AssumedMatchesPerPlayerPerYear is set to 24 (roughly 2 matches/month on average across casual + club + competitive players). Player counts are approximated using country size/tennis-market prominence heuristics consistent with ITF participation framing, then converted to matches with the same global assumption for comparability. This is intended for map visualization when no official global country totals exist.
