Key Findings
  • Doctor availability varies by more than two orders of magnitude across countries, reflecting major differences in health-system capacity.
  • High-income countries in Europe and parts of the Gulf typically report much higher doctor density than low-income countries.
  • Some small countries and territories can show unusually high densities due to concentrated medical labor markets and small denominators.
  • Low doctor density often coincides with broader shortages in health workforce and infrastructure, but it is not the sole determinant of health outcomes.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the availability of medical doctors (physicians/medical practitioners) relative to population size, reported as the number of doctors per 10,000 people. It is a widely used indicator of health-system capacity and access to clinical care.

Countries with higher doctor density generally have greater access to diagnosis and treatment, but comparisons should be made carefully: definitions (who counts as a “medical doctor”), public vs. private sector coverage, and the year of observation can differ across national reporting systems. The values below use the internationally compiled series published by the World Bank (sourced from WHO’s Global Health Observatory and national administrative sources), selecting the latest available year for each country in the 2019–2023 window where possible.
