Key Findings
  • Countries with coal-heavy power systems and energy-intensive industry tend to show higher CO₂ per unit of GDP than countries with cleaner grids or larger service sectors.
  • Some hydro- and nuclear-heavy electricity systems can achieve very low CO₂ intensity even at high income levels.
  • Resource-extraction and flaring can raise CO₂ intensity sharply without a proportional increase in GDP.
  • Comparing this metric over time helps track whether economies are “decoupling” growth from territorial CO₂ emissions.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures how much carbon dioxide (CO₂) a country emits for each unit of economic output, using production-based emissions (emitted within the country’s territory) divided by GDP measured in purchasing power parity (PPP) international dollars. It’s a compact way to compare how carbon-intensive different economies are while partially accounting for differences in price levels and living costs.

Lower values generally indicate a less carbon-intensive economy—often due to cleaner electricity, more efficient industry, or a larger services sector—while higher values can reflect reliance on coal, energy-intensive heavy industry, flaring, or extraction-driven activity. Because it uses production-based emissions, it does not capture “imported” emissions embedded in traded goods, so consumption-based comparisons can differ for highly trade-exposed economies.
