Key Findings
  • Landlocked countries (e.g., Central Asia) tend to have the largest average distances to seaports, highlighting structural trade disadvantages.
  • Small island states often have extremely low average distances because most residents live near the coast.
  • Large, sparsely populated countries can have higher averages even when they have multiple ports (distance reflects where people live).
  • This metric complements (but does not replace) performance-focused indices like the Logistics Performance Index by focusing on physical accessibility.

About This Statistic

This statistic measures the average road distance (in kilometers) that people in a country would need to travel to reach the nearest seaport. It’s a practical way to visualize how geography and infrastructure shape logistics costs, trade competitiveness, and even the price/availability of imported goods.

Landlocked countries and nations with sparse road networks typically show much longer average distances, while coastal and highly connected countries tend to have shorter distances. While it does not measure port quality, customs efficiency, or shipping frequency, it is a compelling, easy-to-grasp indicator of how physically “close” a country is to global maritime trade routes.
