Key Insights
- •Mobile broadband performance differs by an order of magnitude across countries, reflecting infrastructure and 5G maturity gaps.
- •High-performing mobile markets often combine dense 5G coverage, ample spectrum, and strong backhaul capacity.
- •Lower speeds typically correlate with limited spectrum, congestion in urban cells, or constrained international/backhaul links.
- •Median-based reporting provides a more robust ‘typical user’ signal than averages in skewed distributions.

About This Statistic
This statistic reports the median mobile broadband download speed (in Mbps) for each country, based on aggregated, user-initiated Speedtest measurements. Using the median (rather than the mean) reduces the influence of extreme outliers and better reflects the “typical” user experience.
Speeds vary widely across countries due to differences in spectrum availability, 4G/5G coverage, network investment, device mix, backhaul capacity, population density, and regulatory environments. The dataset is updated frequently; for a stable annual snapshot, this version uses a 2024 country-level reference.
Source note: Ookla publishes country rankings and methodology under Speedtest Global Index / Speedtest Intelligence. Country values may differ from regulator-reported KPI results because this is crowdsourced performance data from real devices and real networks.
