About This Statistic
Direct, standardized country-by-country measures of “anime popularity” are not produced by most official statistical agencies. A widely used proxy is Google Trends’ country-level Search Interest for the “anime” topic, which reflects how often people search for anime-related content relative to the peak country in the selected time range.
Values are normalized by Google to an index from 0 to 100 for the chosen period, where 100 represents the highest observed interest among included countries (not absolute search volume). This makes it useful for comparing relative interest across countries, but it can be influenced by internet penetration, language/search behavior, and how Google’s topic model groups queries.
Methodology
Using Google Trends, query the Topic “anime” and set geography to Worldwide with the time window “past 12 months” (approx. Apr 2023–Apr 2024 as accessed Apr 25, 2024). Extract the country/region interest scores shown by Google Trends. Scores are normalized so that the top country in the selection = 100 and other countries are scaled relative to that peak. This dataset uses those reported country scores directly as a proxy for ‘anime popularity’.
